Homestead Holiday Idea: New Year's Eve With Children

This idea is mentioned under the 'Building Traditions' section of my Centsible Holiday Handout, but since we're coming up to New Year's Eve, I thought I'd briefly highlight it on my main page as well.

We were looking for a festive, inexpensive way to celebrate with our small children at home. We watch movies, eat fun food, and play games, but I wanted something to really make this holiday stand out; a creative, distinct tradition for my kids to look back on. I'm not really sure how this idea popped into my brain, but somewhere I got the notion to pitch our smaller dome tent in the living room, and let the kids 'camp in' for the night. We tried it last year for the first time with great results. As soon as we made it to midnight, we pitched the tent, loaded up the sleeping bags, and bid them goodnight. They were excited, yet exhausted enough to sleep soundly. They are already anticipating it for this Friday night, and truthfully, that's what really tells me how successful it was!

Sometimes we forget how simple it is to 'WOW' our children. Often all you need is a change of scenery and positive marketing. Whether you're pitching an indoor tent on New Year's Eve, or changing up meals for other special days, just remember to keep it simple and enthusiastic rather than elaborate and expensive. :)

Happy New Year!

  1. I just watched you on The Homeschool Channel. Do you have your Handouts available to view on your blog?

  2. Hi there! Yes, if you hit the 'Centsible Home Mgt class Handouts' button on the top left, it will show the handouts for class 1 and 2. I'm not sure which class they showed this morning? We are working on loading them as .pdf downloads onto the page, but in the meantime feel free to copy and paste into your word processing program for easier reading:)
    Happy New Year!
